PHOENIX -- The wait ended Sunday for one valley homeowner who won a free home makeover.Kathleen Dominguez and her two grandchildren, Erika and Santiago, moved back into their new and improved home Sunday, after three weeks away."To walk in and walk into wonderland, really, it's like a dream come true," said Dominguez.Angels on Call, a part of Stardust Building Supplies, an organization devoted to helping people in need, completed a free home makeover, on Dominguez's home. The organization selected Dominguez out of 40 applicants for the free home makeover."Angels on Call is pretty excited to do something extraordinary for Kathleen," said Dee Larson, the program manager for Angels on Call. Before the renovations on Dominguez's home, there were plumbing and electrical problems. The toilet did not flush, and the kitchen ceiling had caved in from water leaks."You get caught up in trying to fix one thing and you have to fix the other and the other, what I call the domino effect," Dominguez said.A team of more than 40 community businesses helped to completely remodel the kitchen with new cabinets, countertops and appliances. It also remodeled the bathroom, donated new furniture, and installed new electrical and plumbing systems."It makes me feel really, really good, because I couldn't do it for them, and with Angels on Call, they're going to be a lot healthier and happier," said Dominguez, referring to her grandkids.Dominguez was laid off six years ago and also had avoided foreclosure three times in the past."It's just going to be fantastic, just knowing that I can lock the door and it's going stay locked, and giving them breakfast in the new kitchen," added Dominguez.Stardust Building Supplies said the home's renovations took three weeks, with the help of valley businesses that donated material and labor for free. The entire project is valued at more than $75,000.
