UPDATED: 11:57 am MST January 22, 2009

Prescott Valley Police Department arrested two men accused of vehicle theft, drug possession and cemetery damage.

Police said they stopped Barton Clay Whitman, 21, of Dewey, Ariz. on Jan. 14 when they discovered he was driving a truck with a false license plate.

After police took him into custody, Whitman confirmed the truck, a Dodge Dakota, was stolen from Oceanside, Calif. in November 2008.

The truck contained burglary tools, and Whitman had narcotics and prescription drugs, police said.

Further investigation led police to a second suspect, Matthew Armando Hernandez, 22, of Skull Valley. Police also recovered three more stolen vehicles, two of which were stolen from businesses in Prescott Valley.

Investigators also found drugs, drug paraphernalia and items stolen from Heritage Memorial Cemetery in Dewey.

The stolen property is valued at more than $54,000.

Whitman was booked on suspicion of vehicle theft, burglary, possession of stolen property, aggravated criminal damage to a cemetery, possession of narcotic drugs, possession of prescription only drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving a truck with fake license plates.

Hernandez was booked on suspicion of burglary, aggravated criminal damage to a cemetery and possession of drug paraphernalia.
