PHOENIX -- Some may not realize it, but the new scale house at the 7th Avenue landfill used to be a portable toilet. The giant portable restroom was spared a landfill death sentence and turned into a functioning scale house at the transfer station."This is a prime castle compared to what we were working in," said Greg Johnson, the landfill's site manager.Waste Management of Arizona said it removed the toilets in a "Crowd Pleaser" set of Port-O-Lets, put in a desk, cleaned up the walls, installed new tile and added a window. The company put in concrete blocks for the foundation."What would have been a giant, space-hogging landfill eyesore is now a fully functioning scale house that's twice as big as the previous one," the company said in a statement. Some may wonder about the scent of the building, but Johnson said there isn't one."There's no smell," he said. "There's no tanks. It's all sealed; it's completely cleaned."In fact, employees said nobody would know what the house used to be except for the "Men" and "Women" labels over the doors. The company said the renovation was a huge success, and a great example of how thinking outside the box can help the environment."We preach in our business -- re-use," said Don Cassano of WMA. "Well, this is the ultimate re-use."
