Police Bust Cockfighting Ring

While serving a search warrant for an investigation of armed robbers, police stumbled upon a possible cockfighting ring, a Phoenix police spokesman said.

According to public information officer Luis Samudio, police discovered dozens of fighting roosters in cages at Brothers Tire Shop in Phoenix.

The Arizona Humane Society, which helped detectives remove the roosters, said there were more than 50 birds.

Detectives also found vitamins and syringes, Samudio said. He said the roosters were manicured and ready for fights.

In addition, investigators found several weapons, ballistic vests, cash and ammunition on the property, Samudio said.

The original search warrant was connected to a possible home invasion and armed robbery ring, Samudio said.

Police believe the alleged cockfighting organization is connected to border-related crimes -- including kidnappings -- across the Valley.

Seven people, including six suspected illegal immigrants, were arrested.
