An alert neighbor tipped off police to a home invasion and attack that saw one of the intruders hit an occupant in the head with a hammer, officers said.

Police arrested three men after they led officers on a foot chase in the neighborhood. They were identified as Darrell Damous, 21, Darren Stanton, 22, and a 17-year-old boy.

The incident began shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday when three men wearing masks entered the single-family residence in the 1300 block of North 36th Drive through an open rear door, police said.

At least two of the men were armed with handguns, investigators said. Once inside, the men confronted the three occupants and demanded property.

One of the victims, a 21-year-old man, was struck in the head with a hammer. He was later treated at the scene by Phoenix Fire and released with no immediate follow-up care necessary. The other residents, a 5-month-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, were not injured.

Officers arrived while the men were still inside the home, investigators said. According to the victims, the men fled out the rear door when they heard the police arrive.

The Special Assignments Unit and the K-9 Unit responded to assist in a search of the neighborhood. One man was quickly taken into custody following a short foot pursuit with a perimeter officer.

Two additional men were located during the area search of the neighborhood by the Special Assignments Unit and K9s.

Officers located a handgun and a shotgun believed to be used by the men during this incident. Officers said the men were in the process of stealing the victim's television and camera but left them behind in their attempt to flee police.
