Higley Yearbook Teacher Suspended

A popular high school yearbook teacher was placed on administrative leave after allegations of "unprofessional conduct" surfaced, Higley Unified School District officials said.

The allegations stem from events at a yearbook conference adviser Jennifer Wojtulewicz and students attended in San Diego at the end of July.

"The district had allegations of unprofessional conduct brought to us by students," said Assistant Superintendent Denise Birdwell.

Birdwell said the district is interviewing students to discover whether Wojtulewicz violated any policies.

Officials hope to conclude the investigation within two weeks, Birdwell said.

Meanwhile, one Valley parent with a student in the yearbook program said she is not concerned about the allegations against the teacher.

"My daughter, who is extremely trustworthy, didn't even feel that it was noteworthy when she returned from her summer trip," Christine Broucek said. "This is a kid who tells me everything."

Broucek said she hopes Wojtulewicz will keep her job, saying she is a teacher who "built a fantastic yearbook program out of really nothing" and the students "really love" her.

"When things got kind of ramped up and they put this teacher on administrative leave, we were all extremely disappointed and upset," Broucek said.

Wojtulewicz was involved in a controversy earlier this year when the word "God" was removed from a student's yearbook profile.
