Havasupai Launch Flood-Recovery Plan

The Havasupai Tribe has new hope in its efforts to recover after flooding shut down its tourism business, according to tribe Chairman Don Watahomigie.

The California-based San Manual Band of Serrano Mission Indians announced Thursday it is donating $1 million to the 650-member Havasupai Tribe.

The economic recovery plan, announced Thursday, has five points:
  • Rebuild critical bridges and access trails
  • Install an early-warning system
  • Update the emergency response plan
  • Provide needed emergency assistance to tribe members who have lost income due to the flooding
  • Prepare new tourism materials
Tourism is the lifeline of the community of Supai, deep in a gorge off the main Grand Canyon that is accessible only by foot, helicopter or mule.

However, the flooding that hit the community in mid-August destroyed a miles-long hiking trail that leads visitors to campgrounds, waterfalls and the village. Right now, helicopters are the only means of travel to the village.

Watahomigie said the tribe is eager for visitors to return to Supai and now can launch its recovery plan, thanks to the donation.
