Police Need Public's Help Identifying Man

MESA, Ariz. -- Mesa police said Tuesday they need help identifying a man caught on surveillance tape robbing a Wells Fargo Bank in Mesa on Oct. 4.The man walked into the branch at 259 W. First Ave. around 3:30 p.m., said Sgt. Ed Wessing of the Mesa Police Department.He was immediately asked to remove the light-colored fishing hat and thin black sunglasses he was wearing, Wessing said. The man refused and told the bank teller, "This is a robbery," Wessing said.The man motioned to his right hip area and told the bank teller he had a gun, but the teller later reported he did not see a handgun at any time during this holdup, Wessing said.The robber was carrying a medium-sized black handbag on his left shoulder, Wessing said. The man put the handbag on the counter and ordered the teller to put money in the bag, Wessing said.The man then calmly walked out of the bank, Wessing said. He is described as black and in his late 30s. He is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds. He has dark eyes and a mustache.The robber was last seen wearing a light-colored, fishing-style hat, red, white, and blue long-sleeved shirt or sweatshirt, light-colored pants and thin “female-style” sunglasses.People with information are urged to contact the Mesa Police Department at 480-644-2211 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
