'Obama Sex Video' Really Computer Virus

POSTED: 7:46 am MST September 16, 2008

An e-mail making the rounds that claims it has video of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama can infect your computer with malware, a technology consultant with computer security firm Sophos said.

The message claims the Illinois senator and Democratic presidential candidate traveled to the Ukraine last year and had sex with many girls there, said Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant at Sophos. It has a link to download and view the video, and it encourages recipients to send this news to your friends.

The e-mail, which comes with any of a number of subject lines, including "sex video with Obama," "Barack Obama hardcore" or "Obama private porno," and appears to come from "infonews@obama.com," installs a piece of software officially known as Mal/Hupig-D, Cluley said. This program is a "Trojan horse" -- data-stealing software that has been disguised as something else.

"Unusually for a malware attack, however, the malicious code is installed while you are watching an X-rated video (albeit not one starring Barack Obama)," Cluley wrote on his blog.

The Trojan targets Windows machines and steals passwords and bank account data, Cluley said. It can be detected and removed by most up-to-date antivirus software.
