Baby Recovers After Being Tossed From Car

Bullets Fly As Men Commandeer Car From Mom

A 5-month-old baby is recovering after a carjacker tossed her from a stolen car Saturday afternoon, Phoenix police said

Shanice Baisey had her baby in a car seat in the back of her Chevrolet Monte Carlo as she pulled into an apartment complex to pick up a friend, said Sgt. Andy Hill of the Phoenix Police Department.

"I just drove up and two dudes (showed) up with a gauge and a pistol and a revolver, and shot twice," Baisey said.

Police said Arthur Galindo, 29, was armed with a shotgun and Romulo Cardona, 23, had a handgun.

Galindo opened fire, missing the woman but hitting the car window and spraying glass on her baby, Hill said.

"It hit my baby's face, and it splattered on my baby's face and she had cuts on her face," Baisey said.

Baisey said she got out of the car. Galindo got into her car and drove off, while Cardona got into a Chevrolet Impala and also sped away.

"Some people in the parking lot came running out as the suspect left in the victim's vehicle, screaming, 'There's a baby inside,'" Hill said.

Galindo tossed the baby and her car seat out the door, Hill said.

"While they were still in that car, they threw the car seat out," he said. "So obviously it was a very reckless and dangerous act."

Minutes later, a police officer spotted the Monte Carlo at 7th Avenue and Southern, Hill said. At 19th Avenue and Southern, Galindo bailed out and jumped into the passenger side of the Impala driven by Cardona, Hill said.

Hill said officers managed to stop the car and arrest the men after a brief foot pursuit.

Police recovered a shotgun and two handguns, Hill said.

"Galindo and Cardona are being charged with a number of crimes in this case, including armed robbery, prohibited possessors of weapons, and felony flight," Hill said.

Investigators believe both suspects were released from the Department of Corrections within the last year after serving sentences for armed robbery.

The baby suffered minor injuries, Hill said.

Police believe the men are connected to another attempted carjacking Saturday morning in which another driver was shot in the shoulder.

Officers said the men tried to carjack a 24-year-old man at 51st Avenue and Thomas Road. When the attempt failed, they shot the victim in the shoulder, Hill said. The victim was treated at a local hospital and released. Charges have not yet been filed in the case.

Investigators arrested Cardona on a variety of charges stemming from a home invasion armed robbery Thursday at 7002 W. Indian School Road and a carjacking at 8114 W. Montecito on Sept. 8.
