Prisoner Fakes Chest Pains, Escapes

POSTED: 12:29 pm MST September 2, 2008
UPDATED: 12:40 pm MST September 2, 2008

A prisoner at a Mesa holding facility escaped from an ambulance Monday evening, though officers found him shortly afterward, authorities said.

Douglas C. Wenz, 48, complained of chest pains and demanded to be transported to the hospital for treatment, police said.

An officer was dispatched to escort the ambulance to the hospital, but the ambulance left before the officer arrived, police said.

Wenz was not restrained, and he fought with the ambulance personnel before escaping, police said.

Officers set up a perimeter, and the Air Unit, a K-9 Unit and officers searched for the man, police said. They found him hiding under a nearby truck and returned him to the holding facility.

Police said Wenz was booked on charges of escape, two counts of aggravated assault, fraudulent schemes and six counts of theft.
