Surgery Performed On Conjoined Twins

Doctors said Saturday they've performed a successful surgery on newborn conjoined twins in Phoenix.

The surgery performed at Phoenix Children's Hospital was to create a colostomy. Surgeons also implanted a device allowing infusions.

A team lead by Dr. Stuart Lacey did the surgery, which went off without complications.

The twins were born by Caesarean section to 20-year-old Kingman resident Ashley Frank on Wednesday. They're joined at the abdomen and share a liver. Together, they weigh 8 pounds, 10 ounces.

On Friday, Frank got to hold her babies in her arms for the first time.

"I'm excited they're actually here," Frank said to media gathered at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix. "And for them to be alive and healthy is amazing."

Doctors say they are conjoined below their breasts down to their pelvic regions. At this point their gender is still unknown.

The one key organ they share is a liver. They have separate hearts, brains and limbs.

Their mom said she is just trying to take things one day at a time.

"It's still kind of not reality," Frank said. "It's definitely a lot to take in."

Lacey said the babies will need to be at least 3 months old before doctors begin to consider a surgical separation.

Lacey said more imaging tests would be conducted later in an effort to better map the interconnections between the two infants.

But he said it is clear that the two already have a great love for each other.

"They cuddle each other, hang onto each other. There's a bond that's there that's unique," Lacey said.

Doctors with Phoenix Children's Hospital say they don't know the babies' gender because of how they are fused.

The babies were delivered two months early after doctors saw there was not enough amniotic fluid supporting them. Despite coming prematurely, they are already breathing on their own, said Dr. Jordan Leonard, a neonatologist.

Frank and boyfriend Johnny Mendoza, the twins' father, first learned they were having conjoined twins in May.

While Frank will likely be discharged this weekend, she intends to stay in Phoenix for however long the babies need to be cared for.

Frank also has two daughters, ages 2 1/2 and 1. The 1-year-old, coincidentally, has the same birthday as the twins.
