UPDATED: 1:30 pm MST August 4, 2008

A man who police said scooped up cartons of cigarettes from a Circle K store escaped, entered an apartment and held the tenants at bay until he passed out from exhaustion.

Tremaine Thomas was booked on Saturday on charges of burglary, criminal trespassing, unlawful imprisonment and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said Thomas entered the store at 1101 S. Rural Road in Tempe, went behind the counter, placed numerous cartons of cigarettes into a bag, and then fled the area in a blue pickup truck.

A Tempe patrol sergeant saw the vehicle and followed it to the area of 1200 E. Spence, police said. Thomas ran from the vehicle, scattering some of the stolen cigarettes on the ground, police said.

Other Tempe police officers were in the area where Thomas fled on foot when a call came in from an apartment dweller who said a man entered his apartment screaming that the police were looking for him, investigators said.

Officers arrived and found Thomas passed out from exhaustion on the living room floor, police said.

Police said they learned Thomas, while still awake, would not allow the occupants to leave the apartment.
