PHOENIX -- Police are investigating a stabbing Friday morning that was originally thought to be a road rage incident, authorities said.

Eugene Villa, 28, stabbed Nathan Rawlins, 31, at Rawlins' home in Glendale, police said. The victim attempted to drive himself to the hospital and crashed into a light pole, authorities said.

Rawlins was able to make a brief statement to the first responding officer before paramedics took him to a local trauma center, Glendale police said.

Officers said the man told them Villa stabbed him.

Police said the victim was in surgery with life-threatening injuries at the time of the report, and it is not known if he will survive.

Villa sustained a minor injury.
