TEMPE, Ariz. -- Severe thunderstorms roamed the Valley Friday night just as thousands of people were getting ready for Fourth of July fireworks.Goodyear called off its fireworks display due to lightning and rain, disappointing around 10,000 people. Some of the storms were capable of producing hail and 60 mile an hour winds. One-inch rains also accompanied the storm system. The SRP Fireworks Spectacular at the Tempe Town Lake Festival went off without a hitch.
A more active monsoonal flow developed on Thursday with higher dew points and unstable air.Lightning during Thursday night's storms sparked a roof fire in the East Valley, one of a dozen lightning strikes that kept firefighters hopping.Roger Thompson said his Tempe home is a disaster. There are holes in the ceiling and ash and debris scattered everywhere."I was sound asleep and all of a sudden, this huge pop," Thompson said.Around 11 p.m. Thursday, Roger and his wife Christy said they got the jolt of a lifetime when a lightning bolt struck the top of their house. Seconds later, the roof was on fire."I could look back down the hall and all of a sudden saw this orange glow," said Christy Thompson. "I said, 'Roger get up. The house is on fire.' That was it. We were out the door."Roger Thompson said the commotion spurred neighbors to action."One of the kids down the street was yelling, 'Get out. Get out. Your home is on fire,'" he said. Christy is saying, 'Get the cat. Get the cat.'"The Thompsons and their cat got out safely. The Tempe Fire Department arrived quickly to put out the flames. But the damage from the pre-Fourth of July blast was extensive.Pieces of metal pipe were blown off the side of the house and into the neighbor's yard. The couple has lived at the home for 23 years and has seen their share of storms but nothing like this."Nothing we could have done to prevent it," Christy Thompson said. "Just happened. Could have been anybody. I told Roger we should go buy a lottery ticket. Maybe lightning will strike twice."
