NOGALES, Ariz. -- More than 5,000 pounds of marijuana was found by narcotics detector dogs hidden among watermelons in a tractor-trailer that was trying to cross into Arizona from Mexico, Customs and Border Protection officers said.Officers said an odor picked up the dogs led them to 200 bundles of marijuana stashed among the watermelons. The marijuana has an estimated value of $8.3 million, officers said.Brian Levin, a spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said Tuesday that officers at the port of entry in Nogales became suspicious of the vehicle Saturday and decided to conduct a thorough search. The tractor-trailer was sent in to the Customs and Border Protection commercial compound for an inspection and after an X-ray scan raised suspicions about the contents, officers said they began unloading the trailer.Officers said they noticed bundles of what later tested to be marijuana hidden inside the containers, mixed in with the watermelons. The driver was arrested and turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It was the second-largest marijuana seizure in Nogales. The largest was June 2, 2007, when officers found more than 6,000 pounds of pot hidden with a load of tomatoes.Last April, officers seized 3,418 pounds of marijuana hidden among pallets of cucumbers and in a separate incident, 1,340 pounds of marijuana hidden among tomatoes was found and confiscated.
