PHOENIX -- A 3-year-old Phoenix boy died Monday afternoon after he shot himself in the head, police said.

The name of the boy has not yet been released.

Homicide detectives arrived at the scene near Interstate 17 and Greeway Road and began investigating what they said appears to be an accidental shooting.

Phoenix police officers said the boy was visiting the home with his mother and 2-year-old brother when the shooting happened upstairs.

The boy managed to grab a handgun and the weapon discharged, police said.

Police escorted the ambulance as paramedics rushed to the child to St. Joseph's Hospital.
