AHWATUKEE, Ariz. -- A 3-year-old girl drowned Saturday afternoon in a community pool at an apartment complex in Ahwatukee.

Her family was holding a barbecue in the pool area at 13220 S. 48 St. when she managed to get away, firefighters said.

Witnesses called 911 and adults in the area started CPR until fire and police units arrived.

A rescue squad transported her to a local hospital where she died.

The accident occurred around 5:05 p.m. The name of the victim has not yet been released.
