Death Penalty Sought Against Hausner

PHOENIX -- County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced Friday that his office intends to seek the death penalty against Dale Hausner in connection with the Nov. 11, 2005, shooting death of Nathaniel Schoffner, who was killed while walking near 20th Street and Monroe in Phoenix.New information provided by co-defendant Samuel Dieteman led to the additional charges.On April 10, 2008, a Maricopa County grand jury indicted Hausner for:First-degree murder, a class one dangerous felony
Conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, a class one dangerous felony
Conspiracy to commit cruelty to animals, a class six dangerous felony.
On Friday, the County Attorney's Office filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty in connection with this recent indictment.A panel of veteran prosecutors reviewed the facts of the case and determined the death penalty was appropriate if there is a conviction. Thomas affirmed that decision.Hausner is facing charges alleging eight counts of murder. His trial is scheduled to take place in September.Vince Imbordino and Laura Reckart are prosecuting the case.Hausner and Dieteman were arrested in August 2006 in connection with a series of shootings in the Valley that began in May 2005.
