Police: Rapist Arrested Where He Met Victim

UPDATED: 8:28 am MST May 15, 2008

A man accused of raping one woman and assaulting another was arrested Saturday at the convenience store where he allegedly met the rape victim, Phoenix police said.

Jorge DeAvila-Lucatero, 24, met the 57-year-old woman at an Ahwatukee Valero gas station shortly before 4 a.m. May 9, according to police.

The woman bought a six-pack of beer and offered one to DeAvila-Lucatero. Police said DeAvila-Lucatero declined but offered to walk the woman home because the streets were dangerous.

The two walked to a nearby apartment complex and began drinking behind a Dumpster, according to police.

Police said the woman stepped to the side of the Dumpster to relieve herself and when she came back, DeAvila-Lucatero grabbed her by the throat and raped her.

When he finished, police said, the woman started screaming and he ran off.

Detectives soon began investigating a possible link between the rape and an aggravated assault that occurred April 20 in the same area. The attackers shared similar descriptions.

In that incident, police said, a 24-year-old woman met a man named Jorge at an Ahwatukee sushi restaurant around 1 a.m.

The woman gave him a ride home and he choked and beat her when she refused to kiss him, according to police.

Investigators obtained surveillance footage of the woman and her attacker at the restaurant and created still images of the man.

Detectives staking out the Valero gas station shortly after midnight May 10 spotted DeAvila-Lucatero and matched him to the surveillance photos from the restaurant. The clerk told police he'd seen DeAvila-Lucatero talking to the victim the night before.

Police said DeAvila-Lucatero tried to run from officers but was quickly taken into custody. During questioning, police said, DeAvila-Lucatero admitted to having sex with the 57-year-old victim and to getting into the car with the 24-year-old victim.

DeAvila-Lucatero said he didn't remember assaulting the younger woman, police said, but told investigators he suffers alcohol-induced memory loss and may have gotten violent because he'd been drinking that night.

DeAvila-Lucatero was arrested on three counts of sexual assault, one count of sexual abuse, two counts of kidnapping and one count of aggravated assault. He is being held without bond.
