Two men who led law enforcement agents on a lengthy pursuit on Interstate 8 Wednesday morning killed themselves after their car was disabled, Pinal County sheriff's deputies said.

Officers approaching the white Dodge Caliber after it was disabled by spike strips heard two gunshots, said Pinal County Sheriff's spokesman Mike Minter.

Minter said authorities said the dead men were brothers from Virginia who have been sought since they reportedly carjacked a couple and took their white Dodge at the Grand Canyon Monday night.

Minter says the men are identified as Travis N. "T-Bo" Twiggs, 36, and Willard J. "Will" Twiggs, 38.

Wednesday's incident began when the men were directed to stop at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint near Welton. The vehicle took with Border Patrol agents in pursuit.

Department of Public Safety officers and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office joined in the pursuit into Pinal County.

The Tohono O'odham police assisted and set up stop sticks. The vehicle was spiked but continued for another half-mile. The vehicle then pulled off the side of the road where Border Patrol agents and MCSO surrounded the vehicle about 30 miles south of Phoenix.

The Pinal County sheriff's office robot is on the scene checking the vehicle in case it was booby trapped.
