2 Men Arrested After Police Stop Stolen Vehicle

PHOENIX -- Police arrested two men they said kidnapped, bound and robbed a Valley pastor before he managed to escape and call 911, said Detective Reuben M. Gonzales of the Phoenix Police Department.Omar Jimenez, 22, and Rudolfo Alvarado-Rubio, 42, each face one count of kidnapping, one count of armed robbery and one count of auto theft.Gonzales said the pastor, Jose Bahena-Estrada, told them he was outside of his church at 2413 W. Buckeye Road Saturday night working in the parking lot when he was approached by the two men.The pair forced him inside of the church, where they tied him up and robbed him of his wallet, money and car keys, Gonzales said.
The robbers then stole the pastor's car leaving him bound inside of the church, Gonzales said.Officers took the initial report and relayed the information about the stolen car into a system which was immediately made available to all police agencies statewide, Gonzales said.Officers continued working this case through the night.On Sunday morning, Gila River police notified Phoenix detectives that they had stopped a stolen vehicle in their jurisdiction with the two men and a third person in the car, Gonzales said.Gonzales said the the two men were transported to Phoenix police headquarters where they admitted to the crimes."This was excellent coordination between the Phoenix Police Department and the Gila River police in making this arrest," Gonzales said.The pastor managed to escape unharmed.ELSEWHERE ON KPHO.COM: The family of a wheelchair patient who was hit and killed by drivers of two SUVs urge any witnesses to contact Phoenix police.
