Wheelchair Patient Hit By 2 Vehicles

Man Dies As Motorists Speed Away

The family of a wheelchair patient who was hit and killed by drivers of two SUVs urge any witnesses to contact Phoenix police.

Neither motorist stopped to render aid in Tuesday's accident, police said.

Police found the body of David DaMart, of Cornville, near Thunderbird Road near 24th Avenue shortly after midnight.

"It's just the most devastating thing I've ever gone through," said his brother, Chuck DaMart.

Major health problems had put the victim in and out of Phoenix hospitals recently, and his health was just beginning to improve at the time of the accident.

"He was in a wheelchair for about a year," Chuck DaMart said.

DaMart said his brother was alone as he maneuvered his wheelchair across the street.

The victim’s mother, Faye Smith, said she had hoped for the best when she got word of the accident.

"And I asked him what hospital David was in,” Smith said. “And he said he was sorry to tell me, but David hadn't made it."

The family said they urge anyone who might have witnessed the accident at the heavily traveled intersection to come forward.

"I just find it hard to believe someone didn't see something," Chuck DaMart said.

Police said they have incomplete descriptions of the vehicles. They said one of them was likely red or maroon and sustained severe front-end damage. They said the second SUV was dark.

Smith said she seeks closure.

"It won't do me any good and it won't do him any good,” she said. “But it may give me a little peace of mind."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 602-262-6141 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
