Teens Injured In Train Collision

Two Florence High School students were injured Thursday morning when their car collided with a freight train.

Authorities said 18-year-old Shannon Pede was driving east on Arizona Farms Road in Florence around 7:20 a.m. when she drove through a railroad arm and hit the train.

Investigators said large skid marks in front of the tracks indicate Pede tried to stop before hitting the barrier. The train struck the back of her car.

Pede's 17-year-old passenger suffered a head laceration but was able to speak, paramedics said. Pede's injuries were unknown, though paramedics said they were less severe than those of the passenger.

Both teens were airlifted to a Scottsdale hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office is investigating the collision.

The past week has been a dangerous one for teens on Valley streets.

Late Saturday, one teen suffered life-threatening injuries and another was hurt when their car hit some trees and rolled over in Peoria. The driver was trying to perform a stunt to post on YouTube.com.

On Wednesday, two teens were killed and nine hospitalized in two separate wrecks. The first happened near Sky Harbor Airport when a sport utility vehicle carrying seven teens rolled off the road. Several were ejected and one died.

In the second wreck Wednesday, an SUV carrying four teens crashed in Gilbert. Two were ejected and one died.
