Deadly 24 Hours On Valley Roads

POSTED: 7:13 am MST April 17, 2008
UPDATED: 3:12 pm MST April 17, 2008

One teenager died and six more were hospitalized Wednesday after their vehicle went off an embankment and flipped over.

The Department of Public Safety said the seven teens were heading south on State Route 153 near University Drive around 3:30 p.m. when the driver, 17-year-old Bismar Corrales-Gonzales, lost control. The GMC sport utility vehicle came to rest on a fence after ejecting three or four of the teens.

Nuvia Millanez, 15, was pronounced dead at the scene. DPS said she was not wearing a seat belt.

The other six were hospitalized in unknown condition. Officials have not determined whether they were wearing seat belts.

DPS said speed was a factor in the crash.

The past week has been a dangerous one for teens on Valley streets.

Late Saturday, one teen suffered life-threatening injuries and another was hurt when their car hit some trees and rolled over in Peoria. The driver was trying to perform a stunt to post on YouTube.com.

In another wreck Wednesday, an SUV carrying four teens crashed in Gilbert. Two were ejected and one died.

On Thursday morning, two teens were injured when their car hit a train in Florence.

A study commissioned by AAA Arizona showed that during 1995-2004, teen driver crashes in Arizona killed nearly 700 people.

The study also showed that in three out of four fatalities involving an Arizona teen driver, the deceased weren’t the teen drivers, but other drivers, passengers, pedestrians and bicyclists.

In 2006, over 9,000 teens in Arizona were injured and 160 were killed. Additionally, males are more likely to die in these crashes than females—nearly 64 percent of those who died in 2006 were teen males.
