PHOENIX -- Firefighters were stung as they rush to save two Valley women and a dog in south Phoenix being attacked by a swarm of angry bees.At least half a dozen people were victims of bee stings as the swarm descended near Seventh Street and Dobbins Road Tuesday afternoon. The dog's owner, Chantell Armenta and her cousin, tried to rescue the Dalmation mix that was helpless to defend himself.Armenta said she had to chain him to a fence because Spot would run away all the time and the county would give her tickets.Spot died shortly after firefighters got him to the Arizona Humane Society."I love my dog and my kids are going to be devastated," she said. The bees quickly moved from the dog to the two women, then to neighbors and ultimately firefighters who suffocated the bees with foam.In the midst of the swarm, Armenta said her cousin nearly stopped breathing."My poor cousin, they would not leave her alone," Armenta said. "They were just all over her. She was screaming for my help and I didn't know what else to do."A bee expert who inspected the area said there was no hive. The swarm of bees was just passing through and there was no real way to prevent the attack.ELSEWHERE ON KPHO.COM: A Bosnian national has been sentenced to 17.5 years in prison for a July 21, 2006 robbery of an armored car that was off-loading money at Casino Arizona.
