A Phoenix man came home to a gruesome scene Monday: his wife on fire in the front yard.

When the man arrived home shortly after 10 p.m., police said, he found his wife, Donna Owens, 67, sitting in a chair on the front lawn, engulfed in flames.

Police said she had fallen asleep while smoking.

Her husband tried to extinguish the flames and was also burned.

The couple was transported to Maricopa Medical Center; authorities said the woman suffered burns to more than 50 percent of her body.

She later died of her burns, police said.

Her husband was treated for burns to his hands and arms and is expected to make a full recovery.
