A Laveen man opened fire early Friday at Glendale officers investigating a previous shooting, Glendale police said.

Officers Kevin Robertson and Bill Powers were investigating a report of shots fired at an apartment complex around 2 a.m. Police said the two officers were checking the side of the building for bullet holes when a silver Honda Accord drove by with its lights off and someone inside opened fire.

"The officers were not only in marked patrol cars, but they had every bright light you can imagine shining on the wall of the apartment building," Sgt. Jim Toomey said in a media release.

Robertson returned fire. Police said neither officer was hit.

Police located the Accord a short time later and said they identified 23-year-old Keith Norman as the shooter.

Norman was taken into custody and treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound. Police said they weren't sure if the wound was the result of the shootout with Robertson.

Norman was released from the hospital and booked into jail on suspicion of several felonies including aggravated assault, endangerment and Shannon's Law.
