UPDATED: 1:03 pm MST March 14, 2008

A "beer run" suspect was shot and killed by Phoenix police Friday after a short pursuit that ended when he crashed into a home.

Police said David Loya, 25, stole beer from a south Phoenix Circle K around 6:30 a.m.

The store clerk called police and gave them a description of Loya as well as his license plate number, according to police.

The pickup Loya was driving was reported stolen Thursday morning, police said.

Officers spotted the vehicle and followed Loya on a short chase that ended when Loya crashed the pickup into the cinder block wall of a home, police said.

Officers said Loya got out of the pickup brandishing a handgun. Police opened fire, though it was unclear whether Loya fired any shots.

Loya was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Loya was an ex-convict who served four years in prison for armed robbery. He was realeased in 2006, then went back to prison last year on drug charges. He was released from that sentence on New Year's Eve.

He would have been 26 years old on Saturday.
