Mom Charged After Son Found At Restaurant

Mesa police have requested a child neglect charge against a woman who allegedly left her 5-year-old son at a restaurant because of a mix-up.

The boy was found alone at about 10 p.m. Sunday night at Amazing Jake's Food and Fun Place in Mesa an hour after the restaurant closed, Mesa police Detective Chris Arvayo said Monday.

The boy could only tell police that his name was Adam and that he ate at the restaurant with his family.

Arvayo said Mesa police got a call from Adam's mother, 29-year-old Pearl Yonko, early Monday evening, at least 18 hours after the boy was found.

Yonko, who lives in Phoenix, told police that about eight to 10 family members dined at the restaurant, and that she thought another family member took Adam in their car.

Adam is in the temporary custody of Child Protective Services and will remain there pending final placement, police said.

"It's a parent's responsibility to know where their child is at all times, regardless of any type of excuse," Arvayo said.

Police said Tuesday that Yonko would be charged with one count of child neglect.
