PHOENIX -- More than two dozen people braved the weather on Monday to stage a "die-in" outside Sen. John McCain's office, protesting his stand on the war in Iraq.

"John McCain is so out of touch. He's probably as scary a candidate as they have," said one woman.

A man said, "I'm just trying to voice my opinion and hopefully, through that, change some people's minds."

A woman protested McCain's stand that things in Iraq are improving and the U.S. is committed to staying there until the country is stabilized.

"McCain doesn't seem to mind that we're going to be there 100 years. It makes no sense to me," she said.

Several protesters were war veterans who said McCain is way off in his position on Iraq and that the U.S. cannot afford to stay there.

"We're trying to send a message to John McCain that we don't want this 100 more years of war that he seems to push out there," said one.

Some high school students were among the protesters.

"If he wants to go out there and fight that war, then he can go for it, but stop sending our troops over there and killing them," said one.

Most in the group expressed hope their efforts would have an impact on Super Tuesday voters.

"We need global peace, not global war," said one.

A Vietnam veteran said, "I've just given John McCain a new nickname, I think it's John INSANE McCain."

The protesters said they know there is no easy fix in Iraq, but believe Democrats would at least try to get the U.S. out.
