Dallas Firefighter Shot In Peoria Dies

POSTED: 7:39 am MST February 4, 2008
UPDATED: 7:42 am MST February 6, 2008

A Dallas firefighter hospitalized after a drive-by shooting in Peoria early Monday was taken off life support overnight.

Charles Whitaker, 38, was in town for the Super Bowl. He and fellow Dallas firefighter Reginald Cuington, 43, were walking from the Moon Saloon to the Comfort Suites near 83rd Avenue and Bell Road around 1:50 a.m. Monday when a car pulled up and someone inside opened fire.

Whitaker was shot in the chest and remained in critical condition after surgery at a local hospital, Peoria police said. He was taken off life support at 3:05 a.m. Wednesday.

Cuington suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was hospitalized in stable condition, according to police. He was expected to be OK.

Tellef said it appeared the shooting was random violence and that the victims were not selected targets.

"We've talked to the people at the nightclub they were at," police spokesman Mike Tellef told KTAR-FM. "All indications, from what they're telling us, is that they had been in there several times over the weekend. They were never a problem."

Lt. Joel Lavender of the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department said the two firefighters were assigned to Station 49 in Dallas. Whitaker, a driver, had been with the department for 14 years; Cuington, a lieutenant, has been with the department for 17 years.

Police had no description of the shooter but said the shots were fired from a white 1980s Buick or dark Crown Victoria.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 623-773-8311.
