PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- A Paulden man slit his dog's throat after complaining that the dog was staring at him, then assaulted the deputies trying to arrest him, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said.Deputies were called to the home of 32-year-old Duane Hegeman and his mother, Teresa Collins, around 5:20 a.m. Thursday on reports of a man who had "gone berserk" and slit his dog's throat. When they arrived, deputies said they found Collins caring for a white and brown pit bull with a throat injury, as well as a large amount of blood in the home.Collins told deputies Hegeman had complained that the dog was staring at him and said he was going to gouge its eyes out, then grabbed a knife and slit the dog's throat, according to YCSO.
Deputies said Hegeman offered no coherent explanation for attacking the dog.Hegeman was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and placed in the back of a patrol car.Deputies said Hegeman kicked out the right side rear window of the car and tried to climb out, then resisted when they tried to buckle him back into his seat. When they removed Hegeman from the car to place additional restraints on him, YCSO said, Hegeman kicked the two deputies in the chest and arms.Hegeman was eventually restrained and booked into jail on one count each of cruelty to animals and criminal damage, and two counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement.Collins told YCSO on Friday that she had taken the dog to the vet for stitches and the dog was doing fine.ELSEWHERE ON KPHO.COM: A woman who beat her son until he bled inside a Mesa Wal-Mart was sentenced Friday to one year in prison, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office said.
