Mesa Teacher Admits To Student Sex

Other Possible Victims Sought, Officers Say

POSTED: 10:16 pm MST December 19, 2007
UPDATED: 2:29 pm MST December 20, 2007

A Mesa High School teacher and coach admitted to having a sexual relationship with a female student who moved in with her after graduation, Gilbert police said.

Gay Lyn Turley, 42, was arrested Wednesday on 10 counts of sexual contact with a minor.

Police said Turley's relationship with her former student began in 2003, when the girl was 16, and that all sexual contact between the two took place at Turley's Gilbert home.

When the girl turned 18, she moved in with Turley.

The victim, now 20, was recently arrested after a domestic dispute, but police said that does not affect the current investigation because she was legally an adult.

"Anything that occurred after that doesn't change the set of circumstances from the time she was 16 to 18," said Sgt. Mark Marino of the Gilbert Police Department.

The victim moved out of Turley's home in 2007 and reported their relationship to police on Dec. 10.

When investigators interviewed Turley, police said, she admitted to the relationship and said she planned to kill herself when the investigation was over.

Turley was denied bond and was placed under house arrest with an electronic monitoring system.

Turley has been a teacher and coach at Mesa High School for about 19 years and was also an employee of the Mesa Aquatic Center.

Officers said they are concerned that there may be additional victims. Anyone with information is asked to contact Gilbert police at 480-503-6500.
