PHOENIX -- Family members of Phoenix resident Mark Goudeau, the man police arrested in connection with a double sexual assault case linked to the Baseline Killer, were emotional as they came and went from Goudeau's home Thursday.Mark Goudeau, 42, was arrested during a traffic stop at about 5 p.m. Wednesday night just blocks away from where he lives and more than a dozen of the violent crimes attributed to the Baseline Killer were committed. He made an initial appearance in Maricopa County Superior Court at midday Thursday, looking fatigued and a bit shellshocked as he was asked by a judge to state his name and birthdate.Commissioner Shiela Madden read the list of charges he was facing: two counts of aggravated assault, two of kidnapping, two of sexual abuse and four of sexual assault, all stemming from the attack on two sisters at a park. She ordered him held without bond pending a Sept. 15 preliminary hearing. He did not enter a plea, but his lawyer, Corwin Townsend, said he will plead not guilty at his next court appearance. "He's doing fine under the circumstances," Townsend said of his client.Goudeau's wife, Wendy Carr, told The Associated Press that police had arrested the wrong man. "My husband is innocent," Carr said in a telephone interview. "This is a huge miscarriage of justice. And they have an innocent man in prison. This is all a mistake. He shouldn't be in prison for something he didn't do.""He's a nice guy," Goudeau's niece, Ebony, told CBS 5 News.Police have forensic evidence to connect Goudeau to two sexual assaults that occurred on Sept. 20, said Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris.Harris emphasized that Goudeau hasn't been connected to any of the other crimes in the string attributed to the Baseline Killer. But he said police were following up on other possibly related crimes.Police spent hours at his home overnight."Seemed like a nice fella," said Dennis Tubbs, a neighbor. "He takes care of the yard and walks the dog."Another neighbor, Viva Bailey, called the arrest "shocking."Neighbor Barbara Holzapfel said the man was a "wonderful guy," a cement worker who left early in the morning for jobs around the county. After 37-year-old Carmen Miranda was killed at a car wash on June 29 a block away, allegedly by the Baseline Killer, Holzapfel said he'd come over and talk about the investigation. "He would say, 'There are idiots all over the world,"' she said.CBS 5 News reported Goudeau has a criminal history. He has been on supervised release from prison since August, 2004. He was incarcerated in 1991 for aggravated assault, armed robbery and kisnapping. The predator dubbed the Baseline Killer has been linked to 23 crimes in the Phoenix metropolitan area dating to August 2005, including eight killings. The crimes also include 11 sexual assaults of women and young girls and several robberies. The earliest crimes occurred along Phoenix's Baseline Road, which gave the predator his name. The sexual assaults have ranged from fondling to rape. In many cases, victims had conversations with the man before they were attacked. He appears to always have a gun and often threatens to shoot and kill victims. The Baseline Killer is also thought to wear disguises. He strikes quickly, in the dark, and generally targets people who are alone.
