PHOENIX -- A 22-year-old inmate nabbed three pairs of "standard issue" pink boxers as souvenirs of his experience in Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Maricopa County jail, deputies said.

Julius Lat was transferred Nov. 18 from the Lower Buckeye Jail to custody of the Tempe City Jail, Capt. Paul Chagolla said.

While being searched, officers found the pink boxers hidden between the inmate's legs, Chagolla said.

When Maricopa County sheriff's detectives interviewed Lat, he admitted to stealing the pink boxers, Chagolla said.

The underwear has a total value of $4.47, according to Chagolla.

"The mock pink boxers my posse sells have always been a big hit," Arpaio said. "Maybe they were a reminder to him to never come back. To have an inmate steal them as a reminder would be a new honor."

Lat was arrested and charged for misdemeanor theft.
