A woman gave birth to her baby on the toilet, killed it and threw the body away before digging it out of the trash and taking it to the hospital, Mesa police said.

Police said 19-year-old Tiffany Lee Hecker gave birth to Jeremy Lee Davidson at 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 22.

  • Hecker told detectives she hadn't known she was pregnant; police said she told them she thought she might have been, but never took a pregnancy test or sought prenatal care.

According to police, Hecker said she felt ill as she drove home from her boyfriend's house around 2 a.m. Later, as she sat on the toilet, police said, she gave birth to a baby boy.

Hecker told investigators she pulled the boy from the toilet and he stopped moving, according to police. Police said she told them she held the baby for a while before putting him back in the toilet.

She then sat back down on the toilet and delivered the placenta, police said.

Police said Hecker then took the baby back out of the toilet and placed him on some towels on the bathroom floor, then told her mother what had happened.

Police said Hecker's mother told her to put the baby in a bag and throw the body away in a trash can outside.

Hecker later changed her mind, put the body and placenta in the trunk of the family car and drove to a Chandler hospital, investigators said.

    Hospital staff called police.

Police said Hecker claimed Jeremy had been stillborn and denied drowning, smothering or injuring the baby in any way.

An autopsy of the infant's body determined Jeremy was born alive and had not died naturally; the baby's death was ruled a homicide.

Hecker was arrested Tuesday morning on suspicion of second-degree murder and child abuse. Bond has not been set.
