UPDATED: 6:24 pm MST October 2, 2007

A Walgreens pharmacy technician has been arrested on suspicion of stealing $5,600 worth of prescription drugs from the store, Mesa police said.

Craig Greeno, 31, of Queen Creek, was apprehended on charges of theft and unauthorized possession of prescription drugs, according to officers.

Greeno had been the subject of a 13-week investigation by a loss prevention officer who arrested him on Thursday.

A surveillance camera captured Greeno grabbing Vicodin from a bin in the store's pharmacy, according to police. The loss prevention later determined that nine Vicodin painkillers were missing form the bin.

During questioning, Greeno admitted to taking Vicodin for his personal use, but said he was unsure exactly how many tablets he took, officers said.

Police said he also confessed to stealing the painkiller from the pharmacy during his employment with Walgreens.

Investigators said they performed a body search at the Mesa police holding facility and discovered three pills in Greeno's left sock.
