Arpaio Hopes Banner Will Attract Recruits

POSTED: 6:56 am MST September 27, 2007

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is trying something new to attract deputies -- he is attempting to recruit officers from other police departments.

"I'm sending a message out -- if you want to enforce the immigration laws, become a deputy sheriff," he said.

Arpaio is hoping to fill 37 vacancies, so he's placed a banner in front of a vehicle entranceway at the Fourth Avenue Jail in Phoenix -- where officers from across the Valley bring prisoners.

Arpaio said it's not the only banner. "We do have another banner behind the door, so as the cops drive in, if they miss this one, they're not gonna miss the other one."

Arpaio said officers in other departments are frustrated over not being able to arrest illegal immigrants.

The Phoenix and Tempe police departments have refused to comment about the banners.
