Motorist Hit After DPS Uses Taser On Him

TEMPE, Ariz. -- A man was hospitalized overnight after running from a Department of Public Safety officer following traffic stop in Tempe and being struck by a truck.Initial reports indicated that the officer had attempted to pull over the vehicle being driven by Matthew Weinzapefel, 33, on U.S. 60, but Weinzapefel got off the freeway at Rural Road and drove to an apartment complex, where there was some type of altercation.DPS said the officer used his Taser to try to subdue Weinzapefel, but Weinzapefel ran and was hit by a utility truck as he darted across Rural.Weinzapefel was taken to a hospital with serious injuries but investigators said he was expected to survive.Tempe police said the driver of the truck did not appear to be impaired and cooperated fully with officers at the scene.
