Remnants Of Henriette To Curb Heat

UPDATED: 11:28 am MST September 5, 2007

The remnants of Hurricane Henriette combined with an upper-level low will curb triple-digit readings that saw Phoenix break an all-time heat record, Weather watch 5 meteorologists said.

Henriette, with 75 mph winds, is expected to make landfall along the coast of mainland Mexico later Wednesday and move north-northeast toward Arizona, according to meteorologists.

  • Hurricane remnants, along with the effect of the approaching low-pressure system, will begin to increase the chances of rain late Wednesday afternoon and keep temperatures under 110 degrees.

Phoenix saw five straight days of 110 degree readings or higher last week, ending on Sunday.

The Valley has seen 32 days of heat reaching at least 110 degrees in the past year.

The Arizona capital's previous record was 28 days, set in 1970 and tied in 2002.

During an average summer, the Valley usually records 10 days of 110 degree temperatures or hotter.

  • "What's interesting about this is we set the 110-degree milestone without breaking any of the four hottest days on record in Phoenix -- 118 set on July 22, 1995; 120 set on June 25, 1990; 121 set on July 28, 1995; and 122 set on June 26, 1990," said CBS 5 meteorologist Steve Garry.

"It could be worse," he said.

The normal high for this time of year is around 104 degrees.

Readings should remain under 100 degrees through Friday, when the upper-level flow will turn to a more southwesterly direction and steer most of the moisture off the east.
