Armed Robbery Escalates Into 2 Gun Battles

PHOENIX -- What began as an armed robbery at a south Phoenix jewelry store escalated into two gun battles on Monday, leaving two of the three suspected robbers wounded, police said.The first gun battle erupted outside Luxor Jewelers between the suspects -- a woman and two men -- and two store employees, police said.The two male suspects jumped a block wall, officers said.The employees, 35-year-old David Fierro and 22-year-old Abraham Olivas, then chased them on foot, where a second gun battle broke out near the parking lot of a K-Mart store at 331 E. Baseline Road.Both of the suspects were hit by bullets, detectives said. Damon McLemore, 19, suffered serious injuries, according to police.The second suspect was driven to a hospital by the woman, later identified as 18-year-old Brittany Harlin, police said. Officers said they caught up with them there.One of the jewelry store employees was grazed by bullet and treated at the scene, police said.McLemore and the other male suspect are undergoing medical treatment and have not yet been charged, according to police.Harlin was booked into jail on charges of armed robbery.
