UPDATED: 6:36 am MST June 28, 2007

The Department of Public Safety said a driver who crashed into the back of an officer's patrol car Tuesday night was text messaging and may have been impaired.

DPS said Sgt. Annette Reyes-Miller was providing traffic safety at a Department of Transportation construction site in the eastbound lanes of the Loop 202 near Gilbert Road.

Shortly after midnight, Reyes-Miller was sitting in her marked patrol car with emergency lights flashing when a Chevrolet Blazer slammed directly into the back of the car, DPS said.

The Blazer's driver, 22-year-old Jenna Meyers, of Gilbert, told officers she'd been text messaging, according to DPS. Officers believe she may have been impaired.

Officials said charges are pending against Meyers.

Reyes-Miller was treated at a nearby hospital for facial bruises and chest pain, according to DPS.
