PHOENIX -- A man who tricked an 85-year-old doctor into letting him inside her Paradise Valley home in February 2006, then robbed, struck, and tied her to a chair, pleaded guilty to the crime on Tuesday, the Maricopa County attorney's office said.Robert Medeiros faces 14 years in prison when he is sentenced June 14.The victim in the case, Dr. Pearl Tang, is the widow of Ninth Circuit Judge Thomas Tang. She was also the first Asian-American woman to practice medicine in Arizona. Tang pioneered an immunization program for Maricopa County schools in 1954.During the February 14, 2006 home invasion, Tang lost consciousness, later awoke, freed herself and called police.DNA evidence tied Medeiros to the case and he was arrested in Prescott.Paradise Valley investigators said that Tang attempted carrying off the crime at about the same time the day before the actual incident. On that occasion, police said Medeiros rang her door bell and indicated that his car had broken down and he needed to use the phone. Tang, without opening her door, agreed to make the call for him, but when she called the number there was no answer.Officers said Medeiros returned the next day with a "thank you" card, which is what lured Tang into opening the door on the second occasion.Tang told the court on Tuesday she was pleased with the outcome of the plea agreement.
