QUARTZSITE, Ariz. -- The Department of Public Safety has identified a suspect in the May 17 shooting of a Quartzsite officer.Gregory Allen Cole, aka "Groundhog," is described as a white man, 6 feet, 3 inches tall and about 275 pounds. He has blue or green eyes, a bald head and was last seen clean-shaven.DPS detectives said Officer Kemp, of the Quartzsite Marshal's Office, conducted a traffic stop on a 1976 Ford Motor Home around 5 a.m. Thursday. As the Kemp began to exit his patrol car, several shots were fired from the motor home by an unknown number of shooters, DPS said. After the officer was shot, the driver of the motor home fled the scene, investigators said.Police said they eventually found the motor home abandoned in the La Posa Campground parking lot in the Quartzsite area.Investigators said they learned the motor home was registered to Kenneth W. Miller and Betty Lou Japel of McMinnville, Oregon. The license plate on the motor home at the time of the shooting belonged on a 1986 Dodge pick up truck, which is also registered to the couple, DPS said. That Dodge pickup truck, described as a black and silver Dodge Ram 50, is missing, along with the Oregon license plate that should have been on the motor home, which is H109178, investigators said.Authorities said they don't know where Miller and Japel are.DPS officers said leads from local Quartzsite residents led them to identify Cole as a suspect in the shooting. Officials warned that Cole is considered dangerous and should not be contacted.Anyone with information about the shooting or Cole's whereabouts is asked to call 911 or DPS at 602-223-2212.
