Dentists Offering Spa-Like Amenities

Some dental offices around the country are using more than Novocain to take the edge off.

The royal treatment is part of a trend at dentist's offices around the country.

Patients in Atlanta think they're getting the spa treatment after being given complimentary hand and neck massages while having their teeth worked on.

In Chicago, patients are treated to free champagne in the waiting room and a cooling facial massage.

"About 50 percent of [the offices] offer some amenities just to make patients feel a little bit more comfortable and at home," said Dr. Ada Cooper of the American Dental Association.

Dr. Debra King of the Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry added, "If we're working on a patient that is relaxed, it makes our job a lot easier."

The American Dental Association encourages efforts to make a trip to the dentist more appealing, but warns that if dental care is not good to begin with, then the extras are just bells and whistles.
