Police: Drunken Victims Slept Through Stabbing

UPDATED: 11:26 am MST March 19, 2007

Three people were stabbed in a Scottsdale apartment over the weekend, but two were so drunk they slept through the attack, police said Monday.

Police said a Hispanic man broke into a woman's apartment at the Mirasol apartment complex near McDowell and Pima roads around 3 a.m. Saturday.

The man stabbed the 22-year-old woman in the stomach before stabbing two men, ages 22 and 24, who were sleeping on the living room couch, according to police.

Officers said the men had drunk so much alcohol that night that they slept through the attack.

The woman left the apartment to call 911 from her cell phone, but shortly after she was connected to Salt River police, the call was lost, officers said.

Scottsdale and Salt River police said they used cell site information and GPS coordinates to locate the area where the call originated, but not the exact location. Officers said they were unable to locate a crime scene.

Police said the woman went back into her apartment and went to sleep.

At 9 a.m., the victims woke up and called police to request medical help.

Police said the 24-year-old man told officers that three Hispanic men had been working on a car stereo in the parking lot of the complex earlier in the week. The man said he had gotten into a shouting match with them because their music was too loud.

The man told police he thought the attacker may have been part of that group.

Police said they think the group was staying at one of the apartments at the complex but that after the attack, they fled to Mexico in a gray Jeep Cherokee with Mexico plates.

The three victims were transported to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn for treatment. The men were released but the woman was held for observation. Police said her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
