PHOENIX -- A 16-year-old died Tuesday evening after being shot in the head outside his home near 24th Street and Broadway Road.

Phoenix police said Jose Ibarra was shot around 6:15 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Investigators haven't ruled out the possibility that the death was accidental, but said the family's story isn’t checking out.

"Information we're getting from them is that there was someone else, but they're not saying who, and we have an independent witness who says something to the contrary," said Lt. Robert Conrad.

Police said they're not actively looking for a suspect in the case.
