Glendale Officer Killed

POSTED: 7:28 pm MST February 20, 2007
UPDATED: 6:01 am MST February 22, 2007

The man accused of killing Glendale police officer Anthony Holly remained in the hospital Wednesday in critical condition.

Bryan Hulsey, 33, was being held in the jail ward of the Maricopa Medical Center on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated assault against a police officer and misconduct involving weapons. Bond for Hulsey was set at $1 million.

According to court paperwork, Holly was providing backup for another officer identified as Officer Goitia, who pulled over a car near 59th Avenue and Camelback Road around 7:20 a.m. Monday on a registration violation.

The car had three people inside. Hulsey was one of the passengers.

During the traffic stop, Hulsey exited the passenger side of the vehicle and shot at both officers, striking Holly, court paperwork shows. Goitia returned fire, hitting Hulsey in the leg.

Hulsey's Criminal Past Uncovered

CBS 5 News learned that Hulsey has an extensive criminal past. According to Department of Corrections paperwork, he was released from prison in December 2005 after serving two and a-half years on charges of weapons, drug possession and aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer. The papers show he was arrested multiple times in Navajo, Gila and Maricopa counties.

Holly was rushed to the hospital and was later pronounced dead in the emergency room, according to Glendale Police Chief Steve Conrad.

Police said the two other suspects were taken into custody. Their names were not immediately released.

Phoenix police were assisting with the investigation of the shooting.

"This is an incredible loss," Conrad said in a news conference. "It's extremely traumatic for all of us. Obviously, our thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Holly, his family and friends," Conrad said.

A resident of Peoria, Holly was not married and did not have any children, police said.

Friends said Holly had joined the police department after serving a tour in Iraq.

"He just got out of serving his country and went right into serving his community," said Paul Frank, a former neighbor and friend of the fallen officer.

Holly is the second Glendale police officer shot in the line of duty in just two months.

In December, officer Jeremy Esh was shot during a traffic stop.

The bullet hit Esh in the neck, but he made a full recovery and just recently returned to work.

Holly Was An Arizona Native

Holly was born in Mesa, Arizona in 1982.

He graduated from Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale in 2000 and then served in the United States Air Force for four years.

He was stationed at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he was a member of the Air Force Honor Guard.

He also was active in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program while stationed in New Mexico.

While in the Air Force Anthony was awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Expert Marksman Ribbon.
