Police: Kidnapped Pregnant Woman Found Safe

PHOENIX -- A pregnant woman who was allegedly kidnapped at knifepoint by her ex-boyfriend Monday morning was found safe, but police are still looking for the suspect, 24-year-old Celso Mendoza.Avondale police said they received a tip Monday evening that Mendoza was holding 19-year-old Lisa Alaniz captive at home there. Police said Mendoza fled when he saw officers in the area and Alaniz, who is six months pregnant, escaped to a relative's house to call police.Officers were originally called just after 1:30 a.m. Monday to a home near Fourth Street and 112th Drive with reports of a kidnapping. Witnesses said they saw Mendoza force Alaniz into a car with a large hunting knife to her throat.Police said Mendoza and Alaniz drove off in a light green two-door Honda Civic with unknown license plates.
The couple has two other children together, and police said Alaniz had an order of protection issued against Mendoza.Mendoza is described as a Hispanic man, 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black baseball cap, a black T-shirt and blue jeans.Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to call Avondale police immediately at 623-333-7001.
